Reinstall Japanese fonts from the Windows' CD, if you use Windows. Go on Control Panel, then double-click in International Options of Language, then check the fields to install oriental characters (insert the Windows' CD in the PC) and reboot the PC. Gce (it)

[編集] Japan Domestic Airlines - where is the Japanese Wikipedia article

There was an airline called en:Japan Domestic Airlines (it merged into en:Toa Airways) to form Toa Domestic Airlines, which became en:Japan Air System.

But when I insert the kanji (日本近距離航空) into JA I get a redirect to All Nippon Airways. If that isn't the kanji for the Japan Domestic Airlines I am referring to, what is the kanji? WhisperToMe 2008年4月3日 (木) 19:40 (UTC)

Okay, so I have been redirected here by 利用者:おはぐろ蜻蛉 regarding edits on Key. This administrator blocked the page for a period of 7 days on April 1st due to the announcement of a new game, Rewrite, the company is making. However, no edit warring was going on, and as far as I can tell from his comments is that he blocked it because the information was recently released. What I can't understand is why this is so since, presently, the Japanese Wikipedia is the only Wiki with an article about Key which has not reported on the new game, so you can imagine how ridiculous I think it is for the Japanese wikipedia to be the only one not reporting on a Japanese game. Also, the game was confirmed not to be an April Fool's joke, but even after this was revealed, the admin still did not unblock the Key article, nor allow the article Rewrite to even be created despite there being information released pertaining to the staff.

So, I would like to know 1) Why he blocked the Key article for 7 days despite there being no edit warring and 2) Why he blocked the creation of the article on Rewrite.--十八 2008年4月4日 (金) 21:35 (UTC)

JA WP hates being a news site instead of an encyclopedia. (There is a guideline against it.) Articles on new products, especially future products, are very strongly discouraged. Although it was discussed here, there has been little progress on this license conflict. The "subject to disclaimers" creates an unnecesary restriction. This causes various problems particularly when moving images from ja.wikipedia to en.wikipedia. Per GFDL license the "subject to disclaimers" cannot be simply removed. A similar change was made on English wikipedia: en:Wikipedia:GFDL standardization.

The resolution is

• Move {{GFDL}} to {{GFDL-ja}}
• Replace each instance of {{GFDL}} with {{GFDL-ja}}
• Move {{GFDL-no-disclaimers}} to {{GFDL}}

I have a bot on Ja.wikipedia (利用者:電算機) that can take care of this task. Is it OK for me to order my bot to make such a change?

Template‐ノート:GFDL#"Subject to disclaimers"についてで議論がありますが、
このlicense conflictについてほとんど進捗がありません。
"subject to disclaimers"は、不必要な規制を強いています。
このため、特にjawpからenwpに画像をもっていく時、問題が生じます。
GFDLにより "subject to disclaimers"　を除去することができません。
enwpではen:Wikipedia:GFDL standardizationのような変更が行われています。

解決方法は以下の通りです。
*{{GFDL}}を{{GFDL-ja}}へ移動する。
*{{GFDL}} を {{GFDL-ja}}で置き換える。
*{{GFDL-no-disclaimers}} を {{GFDL}}へ移動する。

There are earlier proposes archived in Wikipedia:Chatsubo for Non-Japanese Speakers/Archive/Misc#Proposal for simpler Japanese project. Frankly speaking, for grown-up Japanese-speakers, simply written and/or kana-only Wikipedia does not have much merit, and I cannot see the prospect of getting many contributers for such a project. In addition to the websites mentioned at the earlier discussions, you may also try websites that translate Kanji into Kana, such as http://www.hiragana-gateway.com/ (you can see the result here -> http://www.hiragana-gateway.com/hrgn/http://ja.wikipedia.org ). I am Mike Rosoft, an administrator on English Wikipedia. I have a number of accounts registered on various projects; today I attempted to create an unified login, only to discover that the account Mike Rosoft exists on Japanese Wikipedia.

Needless to say, I am not that user (I don't even speak Japanese); judging from those parts of his contributions I can understand (such as the English word "credit card" in his edit), I would hazard a guess that he is a spammer. (Note: he last edited about two years ago, and does not seem to be blocked at the moment.)

Is it possible to rename the user, so that my login works on all the projects? If not, could the Japanese administrators create the account MikeRosoft for me (which I could not create due to being too similar to "Mike Rosoft"?

The Mike Rosoft on Japanese Wikipedia is not a spammer, and he only wrote we should use credit cards to identify Wikipedians to reduce vandalism. Thanks for your response. I know that accounts can't be deleted on Wikipedia, but this is not what I referred to by "usurpation". (I have successfully requested usurpation of an account on Wikimedia Commons. Since the acount "Mike Rosoft" already existed with no edits, I created the account "MikeRosoft" instead. Later, when I learned of an option of usurping the account, I made the request and it was granted: the old account was renamed to "Mike Rosoft (usurped)", and mine to "Mike Rosoft". Generally, the policy is that an usurpation can only be performed when the old user has no edits and does not object to the usurpation [usually due to never starting to contribute to the project].) If usurpation is not an option here, could you please create the account "MikeRosoft" for me (and send me the password) instead? (I don't think contacting the user would have achieved anything; he doesn't have an e-mail address set, and hasn't contributed to this project for about two years.) Hello, I would like to ask a question on the Japanese Wikipedia, since this is a question about the Japanese law system... (ごめんなさい、日本語はできません。)

My Japanese girlfriend and I (I am Dutch) are now living in Holland and are expecting a little aka-chan. Before the baby is born, we have to go to the City Hall, where I can "recognize" the baby, that is to say, since we are not married (yet), I have to state that it's mine and we have to chose a family name for the baby. Now, according the Dutch system, it's possible to give the baby the family name of the fater OR the mother. It doesn't matter if you are married or not! You have to make this choice for the first born, all children born after that, will get the same name as the first born.

Now we are seriously thinking about taking HER name, since I never really liked mine and I don't have a close bond with my family. Besides, my name is too "Dutch" and her name has more of an international sound to it, so it can be used in both Holland and Japan (or anywhere else in the western world), which is a big advantage for our kid in the future, if it should decide to go study or work in Japan. Although I think my father won't be too happy about it, he'll grow over it and besides, the family line is already saved, since he has brothers with (male) children... The name is not on the edge of extinction or anything...

Because I do think it's important that my children carry the same name as the father, in the near future, we want to get married and then I want to take her name as my surname, which is also possible in Holland. Only in the passport I will keep my name, where it will only say "married to ...(wife's name)..." So this is a bit different from the Japanese system...

Is there anybody here who has been in a similar situation? What are your experiences?

Furthermore: since the child will be born before we are married (which is quite common in Holland, I know it's not in Japan), how about the Japanese sytem? Can I still recognize my baby as MINE according the Japanese law system? Will I be registered as the father. And after we get married, how will the situation change according the Japanese system? Can I be registered as the father, although the baby doesn't even carry my family name???

As I write about the particular subject at the English Wikipedia, I have noticed that 劇場版 仮面ライダー電王&キバ クライマックス刑事 has been deleted four times because of inappropriate edits by IP address editors. While I have written its article over at the English Wikipedia, I find it odd that no registered user has written about the film here, particularly because it was the number one film its opening weekend.

My grasp of Japanese is not strong enough to write the article here in Japanese, so perhaps a member fluent enough in English can read the English Wikipedia page and write a proper page for the Japanese Wikipedia. As detailed in a New York Times article, there is an error in the Japanese characters in the Wikipedia logo. I have tried creating a fixed version at Image:Wikipedia-logo_thue.png. I agree on that it's another mistake. I looked up Chinese dictionary for the character and confirmed that "祖" is the correct character for both Japanese and Chinese. (Chinese characters are used in both Japanese and Chinese as the Latin alphabet is used in both English and French.) The difference of two characters is: the left part of the character on the current logo is one needless line added to the correct character. I've noticed that there seems to be a lot of katakana on the Japanese wikipedia. I'm just wondering, aren't there native Japanese words for a lot of these words. I mean, this katakana jargon really polutes the language and it's sad that the Japanese haven't tried to curb the polluting of their language. Things like "terebi" - there could have been a word formed using the japanese for "electric" and "screen" (like in Chinese). I just think it's important that on this wikipedia, there is a reduction of this katakana jargon. Surely, SURELY, words for things like "pink" exist in native Japanese or a sino-Japanese word, instead of using the silly "pinku", same case with "orenji". The Japanese really need to ensure the safety of their language. That's what the Academie Francais does with French - stops the incursion and pollution of french by anglicizations. That's what Japan needs - to stop and turn back the pollution of language. To have native compounds to substitute this katakana jargon. I don't think there is a word we can use in place of テレビジョン (terebijon), though it is possible to say テレビ受像機 (terebi juzôki) for the machine we use to watch TV. Japanese-speakers make distinction between 桃色 (momo iro) and ピンク (pinku), or 橙色 (daidai iro) and オレンジ色 (orenji iro), though the difference may be slight. We Wikipedians just follow the custom of the society. To worry the "pollution of Japanese language" is not our business, but 文化審議会's (or 国語審議会's in the past), as to worry the pollution of French is not the business of the contributers to French Wikipedia. And, for your information, there are a lot of Japanese who think the usage of katakana words should be restricted, including governmental organizations (e.g. [4], [5]). You may find the article 外来語 useful to understand the situation (I assume you know at least some Japanese). I myself consider such flexibility of language interesting; if you start denying the import and adopting of "foreign words" into "Japanese", you have to deny all the Kanji and Chinese-orign words as well. Why is that the words such as 受像機 and 桃色 are not a pollution while テレビ and ピンク are? Just because they came in at an earlier stage of its history?? --Aotake 2008年5月29日 (木) 13:50 (UTC)

You raise some good counter-arguments. Japanese words of Chinese origin (ie the Kanji), I don't consider these 'pollutants' in the same way that I think gairaigo (english loanwords) have contaminated the Japanese language. Why? well for one, kanji haven't caused a division to form between older and younger Japanese. The lack of understanding some older Japanese people have just shows how disgraceful the government has been in stopping this language invasion. I won't lie, in terms of language I am a stubborn-minded purist, and I'm proud to be one. Kanji are the result of historically STRONG ties between china and Japan. These countries are tied in so many ways, with a history which streches back FAR past world war II!! The West has always tried to exploit Japan and Asia as a whole (Perry's Black Ships, for example). So I see gairaigo as just the next prong in this exploitation of Japan. It corrupts native wago words, and it is just displacing native Japanese, as well as Sino-Japanese, which I see as just as much an integral part of Japanese. People trying to compare Chinese language absorption in Japan with English language absorption ignore the HUGE difference between these two absorption phases. The English language absorption of late is no absorption, it is a DELUGE which is confusing the language and leaving the older generation with no clue as to what is going on (paburiku inburorubumento is the perfect example, don't even think I spelt this jargon correct). I just think gairaigo needs to be stopped. My dream is that one day, romaji will be totally removed from Japan, and that gairaigo will be replaced by calques derived from TRUE Japanese. --121.208.169.187 2008年5月30日 (金) 08:31 (UTC)

We don't and don't need to follow to che Chinese way. You mentioned that there are very strong tie between Japan & China, but that it not true. Just like English language is accepting vast of borrowed words from languages from everywhere of the world, we have been and are going to welcome many words from anywhere from the world. As a Japanese who learned a bit of Chinese, I want to add another viewpoint: both languages are just trying to find easier ways to import foreign(English) words . It is not because that the Chinese looks much on Chinese character, but because it's simply easier to pronounce for Chinese speakers that the Chinese use Hanzi (Kanji)-translated words instead of using gairaigo-style words. Chinese syllables are pronounced much longer in order to make tones recognizable when compared to the syllables of Japanese, whose syllables takes one of the most simplest forms -- all syllables are open -- of the languages of the world. Foreign words (English words) often include too many consonants for Chinese words. Thus, Chinese people translate foreign words for easier pronounciation. By contrast, Japanese speakers are used to words with many syllables because of the nature of Japanese language. So, we prefer to simply convert the consonants into syllables as seen in gairaigo-style words. In my idea, I think it's not a issue of positive attitude or stubbornness to their native languages, but of just easiness for pronunciation.--Autem 2008年5月30日 (金) 17:47 (UTC)

You're really opened my eyes on this issue, Autem. I'm starting to understand now - for Japanese, it's often easier to just phonetically translate, that is, by pronunciation. I suppose that is a good thing in some ways. As long as there aren't TOO many words gairaigo, because the older people often struggle to understand :) Thanks for your input anyway, it's made things a lot clearer in my mind. Hello Japanese Wikipedians, As a PhD student from Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, I plan to present a project related to Japanese and Chinese Wikipedia in the fourth global iSummit, to be held in Sapporo, Japan from 29 July to 1 August, 2008. I really like to meet some of the Japanese Wikipedians now via electronic communication or around that time face to face in Sapporo. My presentation will be how and why to initiate a co-written Sino-Japanese history textbooks by Japanese and Chinese Wikipedians. I am a Taiwanese myself, and I do value historical reconciliation and also Wikipedia's development.

I know you have been very busy setting up the Usurpation methods, deciding on a Japanese translation and handling all the English username change requests due to the general introduction of SUL. But, do you have a rough idea of how long it will take to handle the ordinary (i.e. non-usurping) name change requests? It would be nice to have a rough estimate, so I know whether it makes sense to check my ja-watchlist so regularly in order to complete the SUL. Thanks for your efforts, 朝倉明 2008年6月5日 (木) 13:39 (UTC)

I think ordinary name changes have been handled when any bureaucrat find it necessary to take care of it, and usually they wait for more than a week. Last name change was done on May 25, and at that time the requests placed before May 12 were processed; the oldest one was placed on April 11. Occasionally there are cases processed immediately, too. We have six crats here but two of them are rather inactive now, and when others are busy, process tends to take time. For usurpation, Ks aka 98, one of the crats, has suggested earlier that he thinks we should in general wait for two weeks after notifying the current owner. Recently he mentioned that this may be shortened to one week, though personally he thinks two weeks may not be sufficient in certain cases. --Aotake 2008年6月5日 (木) 14:26 (UTC)

Could you indicate to which situation does your fix apply? At least in my environment (Safari, Firefox for Mac OS X) the external search links in e.g. this page do work. Also I would appreciate if you could provide the points for your fixes:

• "searchInput" -> "poweredSearchText". In the above page "poweredSearchText" fields is located far below from the external search buttons. Using "searchText" field might be better, IMHO.
• adding Wikiwix: some might consider having too many engines to be a clutter. I would like to see at least one more person to support this addition.

I have created the article American mutilation of Japanese war dead in the English language wikipedia. However I start feeling overwhelmed by American and Australian editors that go around military webpages trying to recruit support for their viewpoints.

I therefore thought it would be a good idea to try to bring some Japanese views into the topic, and ask if there is any Japanese literature that can be added. If there is a Japanese military issues portal then perhaps someone reading this could please copy this request also to that portal, and any other Japanese Wiki portals where there might be people with knowledge and interest in the topic? Perhaps the Japanese article on this already exists?

I am a Japanese citizen, consider myself moderate in political views, and deeply disgusted/horrified by the pictures and the description in this article.I don't know if I should either criticize the Americans, justify their acts, or refute the accuracy of the whole thing itself. As I understand it there is now a very basic "stub" on Japanese wiki: 米軍兵による日本軍戦死者の遺体の切断, perhaps you can discuss it there also. I agree with you that it can be powerful stuff, this image, which was picture of the week in LIFE magazine, eventually became known also in Japan, and together with other known fact such as the fact that U.S. President Roosevelt was given a letter opener carved out of a Japanese soldiers arm bone by a Congressman, (who apologized that he could not give the president a bigger piece of Japanese anatomy) led to a deep fear of the Americans in Japan, and it has been estimated that this played a role in the mass suicides in Okinawa. Here is another picture American troops 'murdered Japanese PoWs'.

Now that I'm here again, 2 more questions. An Australian editor who has been working on trying to remove the article has tried to explain away the fact that when the dead Japanese soldiers bodies were taken home from the Marinara islands 60% of them were missing their skulls. He argued that this was due to a Japanese custom of only taking pieces of the body home. Is there such a Japanese tradition, and could it be used to explain the large number of headless bodies?

The second question, does anyone have any good info on the rapes of Japanese women by the occupation forces, for example the 10,000 that were raped on Okinawa? A Dutch user with IP address 86.83.155.44 (D.A. Borgdorff) once translated about 35 years ago a book from French in Dutch. For a proof (trial print) about 30 books were printed and he confirmed on the nl-wiki that none of these Dutch books can be found in any library, not even in The Netherlands. In the last few months he has been adding references to his book and the French original in about 15 language versions of Wikipedia for the articles about en:de Broglie hypothesis like the Ukraine Wikipedia, the Hebrew Wikipedia, the Italian Wikipedia, etc. Also on the Japanese Wikipedia he added in February in ド・ブロイ波 a reference to that French book and his Dutch translation. The French author is almost unknown (not even the French or English Wikipedia have an article about him) and the topic of the book is not really about de Broglie hypothesis. Early March that was removed by the Japanese user Fryed-peach [7]. But he restored it and he did so 3 times within 24 hours (March 4 at 20:59 JST [8], March 5 at 10:03 JST [9] and March 5 at 10:25 JST [10]) and therefore violated the Wikipedia:Three-revert rule. I informed him he violated that rule and asked him three questions on the talk page of the article (ノート:ド・ブロイ波). Since he didn't reply I restored the article several days later to the version after the revert of Fryed-peach.

He recently started adding a reference to that French book in the Japanese article (this time without mentioning his translation). He still didn't answer any of the questions on the talk page like "2. Why do you think the document written by René-Louis Vallée is very relevant here? He is not so famous and the topic of that document seems not to be the same as this article." Since he is recently doing similar things on about 15 language versions of Wikipedia of that article (often with a reference to his own Dutch translation although Chinese or Ukraine readers most likely cannot read Dutch and the Dutch book is not available to the public anyway) several wikipedians have reverted his crosswiki activities. He doesn't mind starting edit wars all over and as a result off these (near) edit wars already in at least 4 languages the article has been protected

Back last April, I came across the WP:SE guideline after an administrator locked both Key and Rewrite. Key was unlocked a week later, but Rewrite remained locked for over three months due to the guideline. However, a few days ago, Rewrite was unlocked, along with a bunch of other articles that were initially locked for the same reason. Hello, from what I can see on the log for Rewrite, it was unlocked primarily because the lock decision was made during the test run period for the WP:SE rule. I would like to leave it unlocked just because apparently there seems no appropriate period of locking (e.g. official launch date of the game). If somebody is feeling like to submit something like the old deleted edition (just consisting of the title and publisher, main staffs), I would like to advise not to do that right now, since it is likely to be deleted again in regard to something else (like Wikipedia:即時削除の方針) anyway. --Makotoy 2008年7月20日 (日) 15:12 (UTC)

But I don't get it. Even if it was during the test period, doesn't the same criteria still stand, or if they don't, they why was the article locked in the first place? According to WP:SE, the game Rewrite which is announced but not yet on the shelves should either have enough account not to be considered as an advertisement, or be deleted if it is impossible. I (hopefully not the only one) consider a game article with just title and production staff list to be nothing but an advertisement. From a quick research, I myself got an impression that it is almost impossible to make that article encyclopedic at this moment. Thus, that article being deleted makes sense. I don't know the precise rational behind the initial locking (maybe it was just a test of the measure you take in such case), but speaking in general, if you can leave an article unlocked without any immediate problem, we would like to leave it so. Hi, this is being a bit frustrating and I'd like to bring the issue to community attention.

My bot User:タチコマ robot had been indefinitely blocked for reporting material presented on Special:Brokenredirects with speedy deletion tags. I am told on my talk page that broken redirects for userpages are an exception per Wikipedia:即時削除の方針 which of course I can't read.

I have no reason to doubt that such an exception exists in policy. I am merely pointing out that leaving such broken redirects is not a good practice. Such broken redirects clutters the special page. There are two possible solutions to the problem that comes to my mind.

1. Creation of the non-existent page - even an empty page would fix the issue.
2. Deletion of the broken redirect (common practice on all other wikimedia projects)

I do not believe my bot "broke down" as it did exactly what mediawiki (Special:Brokenredirects) directed it.

Hmmm... According to revision history of the pywikipediabot, function about putting speedydeleation tag was added at r5698 in July 2008.[12][13] I guess that the issue occurred after getting the later revision from repository and using with "broken" option of the bot. Probably. Until recently I didn't used the "broken" check as double redirects were taking all of my attention. Now with the built-in mediawiki bot I can divide my attention to other tasks such as this. Now, I read talking between you and User:Kanjy. The reason for creation "broken reditects" by bureaucrat, is for keeping traceability. For example, the redirects will guide new user's page anyway at clicking an signature of old-username on talk page. But the pointing out[14] that the special page will be malfunction in the future is useful for community. I will submit this information (and your proposed solutions) to the Village pump... [編集] Question regarding 外来語

I'm new to the Japanese Wikipedia, and wonder if someone could help me understand better the kana table found on 外来語. I think I know what it is saying, based on my rudimentary translation, but wanted to confirm if my thoughts are correct. Based on my read of the article and the Agency for Cultural Affairs website on the subject, I understand "group 1" kana (those in the orange color) to be more commonly accepted forms that can be used for a variety of loanwords, with a few exceptions where another form is more common. "Group 2" kana (those in blue) are less common, but are acceptable for words needed immediate transcription into Japanese, such as people's names and place names. However, you should not use Group 2 if the transcription can be better formed using two kana mora instead of the one listed. I understand "Group 3" to be kana that aren't that common, if used at all, and are just shown as examples.

If someone could please let me know if my understanding of the chart/kana use is accurate, or let me know where my description varies. I'm beginning to port U.S. county and place articles from the English Wikipedia, and am working on the proper way to render those names in katakana.
